Far Exceeded My Expectations - Best Nikon Digital Camera Critique

by Ryan Sanchez

I loved the camera before it failed, but the waterproofing was reason I bought it. When that failed, it became pure crap.

While I haven't exposed it deliberately to any of these yet...I'll update once it's been initiated. I bought this camera for my daughter to take on her vacation. Within a day of simple testing, the colored panel in the front already developed a scratch. The functions are not intuitive at all, for example, trying a simple thing like turning the camera on and then trying to zoom in you get "not available in the current mode".

It took acceptable photos in the pool and on a couple of snorkeling excursions. I've since used it on hiking trips when rain is expected and getting near waterfalls. Then, once at home, I followed the directions to clean the camera lens and shutter. None of the manufacturer's directions worked to bring this camera back to life. If you read the manual on it and learn the Canon beforehand it's a pretty cool camera, but personally when I'm in the heat of the moment for an awesome shot I don't want to be fiddling with buttons and trying to remember how to get to whatever setting I need. I give this camera an A+, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what improvements they make on it in the next couple years. On the river I took numerous pictures with all the settings to be very disappointed. The quality was so terrible; I double checked all the settings to make sure it was not user error. I bought this camera in replacement of my former Olympus Stylus 720SW which had broken after my son opened the battery cover while taking pictures in the lake. I love, love, love my 720SW, and assumed that the current Olympus water-proof cameras would be an equally quality product. I love all the scene options, especially panorama. The menu is easy to understand and the screen is huge, which is great.

I don't want to have anyone moving so fast inside my house that I can't wait for the flash to recharge. Outside, you can turn the flash off, and the camera still takes clear pictures.

This make it difficult to take a one handed shot. The body is VERY SLIPPERY and no texture to help with your grip.

I love this camera; I have bought 4 of them. I have purchase one for my son, one for my ex-husband and one for my nephew.

It's the firmware in the camera and it is already there. More than you can shake a tripod at.

The iAuto mode rarely turned out a picture in focus and I had to take multiple of the same shot to get one decent one. Although I believe something was internally wrong with my camera, I was NEVER able to get an in focus picture when zooming more than half way in (using either digital or optical zoom). So all in all, I can't say that this camera was awful because it did have some pros that I think were beneficial to me and could be to other people. I bought this camera as a replacement for a compact point and shoot cannon.
